Rex The Dog - I Look Into Mid Air (4:13) Rex The Dog (real name: Jake Williams) is gaining quite a reputation in the electro-house scene for some excellent remixes of The Prodigy, Soulwax and Depeche Mode as well as a notable release on Kitsunè records. Having started out on the German techno label Kompact, Rex The Dog is now releasing his debut album, "The Rex The Dog Show", which is primarily based around electro-house beats and occasional electro pop vocals. But the album, consisting of 14 tracks, is actually quite varied with some tunes emphasising a more minimal side of Rex The Dog, whilst other tunes sound like he’s sampled the stuff that actually sounded decent in the early 90s. And there are even a couple that sound thumping enough to send a bunch of pilled-up gurners and gurnerettes to the moon and back at Ministry Of Sound. The highlights of the album include the single ‘ I Can See You. Can You See Me?’, a cluster of synth-fuelled electro pop that would appeal to fans of Hot Chip, and the fantastic remix of The Knife’s ‘Heartbeats’ (Yes, The Knife made the original- not Josè Gonzalèz) which is really something special and worth checking out. Rex The Dog seems to have a thing about Swedish artists as the other remix on the album is none other than pop-punkers, The Sounds’ Tony The Beat (Push It) which is equally as impressive. My personal favourite is the hard hitting floor-filler ‘Frequency’. This anthem, in all its clubby perfection, is simply impossible not to bounce along to - despite personally not being a fan of the sort of clubs it would be played in. Overall the album, with its variety, is damn good. I recommend it as an album to listen to whilst getting ready to go out (although I must point out it doesn’t take me 45 minutes to get ready. Well, OK, sometimes it does. But only because I get carried away with the music…) and I can imagine a lot of DJs will be more than happy to spin some of the tunes on the album at the trendy bars which the cool people frequent. Rex The Dog is barking up the right tree and deserves some recognition. Woof! by Chris Foster |
